Quick Answer
"Failed to join. The connection timed out." is a real error message players have reported in Machine Party. A player posted the exact text on the Steam discussion board; the thread received zero replies with a fix.
What we can tell you is short:
- Confirm the room code is fresh. Player reports and the community mod project's technical documentation suggest codes are one-time and tied to the room — if the host closed their game or restarted Steam, the same code reportedly stops working. Ask them to send you a new code from a currently-open room.
- Confirm both of you are updated. The latest patch (v1.5 on August 4, 2026) fixed graphics and geometry bugs but did not publish any networking changes. Still, running mismatched versions is worth ruling out.
- Try the host-side angle. If you're hosting and friends can't join, restart Steam and try again. If they're hosting and you can't join, ask them to restart Steam.
- If nothing works, the official route to other players is the LFG Discord — see the Discord page. There is also a community mod (MachineParty+) that adds a global server browser, but it has caveats; details on the multiplayer mod page.
- Report it. The developers point players to the "Bugs & Issues" pinned thread on the Steam discussion board.
That's it. There is no official networking troubleshooting guide for this game. We are deliberately not listing generic network troubleshooting because none of it has a primary source for Machine Party.
The Honest Truth About This Error
Three things worth knowing up front:
- The developers have never published a fix, explanation, or troubleshooting guide for this error. Eight official announcements since April 2026 have covered gameplay features (Original / Arcade modes, couch co-op, balance changes, sales milestones) — none of them addresses networking.
- The most relevant player report on the Steam discussion board has zero replies with a fix. That's not unusual for niche game bugs, but it does mean there is no community-validated solution we can point you to.
- Generic networking advice is everywhere — and none of it has been verified to work for Machine Party. A Steam discussion board search for "firewall" returns zero results. Searches for the most common generic suggestions (port forwarding, NAT type changes, VPN, accelerator services, DNS changes) return no community-validated fix.
So we are not going to tell you to open ports, change NAT types, use a VPN, install an accelerator, switch DNS providers, or modify your firewall. Some of them may work; some of them may not. Without a single verified community report of any of them fixing this specific error in this specific game, we don't have a basis to recommend them.
Things You Can Confirm
These are not "fixes" — they are confirmations that rule out the simplest explanations before you file a bug report.
Is the room code still valid?
Based on player reports and the community mod project's technical documentation (player and mod observations only — the developers have not published how codes are scoped), an 18-digit code sent by your friend is bound to the room that exists right now. If any of these happened between your friend generating the code and you typing it in, based on the same observations the code is reportedly dead:
- Your friend closed the game.
- Your friend restarted Steam.
- Your friend's machine crashed or lost connection.
- The room auto-closed because everyone left.
- Your friend started a new room (the old code is for the old room).
How to confirm: ask your friend to look at their room code in-game and send it to you again. If the new code works, the old one had expired by the same observed rule.
Are both copies of the game updated?
Run Steam and confirm both you and your friend are on v1.5 or later (the August 4, 2026 patch). Mismatched versions can cause connection failures in any multiplayer game, even if the developer hasn't specifically called it out for Machine Party.
Can you host a room that someone else can join?
If you can host a room and your friend joins successfully, the issue is on your friend's end (their network, their game, their code). If your friend can host but you can't join them, the issue is on your end.
Did Steam itself restart recently?
Steam occasionally loses track of lobby state after updates or restarts. A clean Steam restart on both sides resolves some reported issues.
When You Can't Get a Connection to Work
Three options, in order of effort:
- Try the official Discord LFG channel. If your friend is the only person you can imagine playing with and that friend can't connect, the LFG server is full of other groups and randoms looking to fill lobbies. See the Discord page for the invite link and what to expect.
- Consider the community multiplayer mod. MachineParty+ (MP+) adds a global server browser, in-game text and voice chat, and other features the official game doesn't ship. It's a real option, but it has caveats: only works between modded players, breaks the Steam Invite button, and game updates can break the loader. Full breakdown on the multiplayer mod page.
- Report the issue. The developers point players to the "Bugs & Issues" pinned thread on the Steam discussion board. Include your hardware, network type (home wifi / wired / mobile), the exact error text, and the time the failure happened.
If the Game Won't Even Launch
If your issue is that the game itself won't open (crash on launch, black screen, no window) — that's a different page. See the Vulkan / launch crash page.
