Quick Answer
If Machine Party is crashing on launch, won't open, or showing a black screen, the Vulkan requirement is one possible cause — but it isn't the only one. The Steam store page explicitly says "Vulkan support required" on both Windows and Linux, so the game will not run on hardware that doesn't support Vulkan. But many crash reports on the Steam discussion board don't mention Vulkan at all — they describe windows closing immediately, no error message, or no picture at all.
What the developers have actually said to do is short and concrete:
- Update the game to v1.5 or later. The August 4, 2026 patch (v1.5) shipped Godot 4.5.2 and "a batch of graphics fixes across various hardware configurations." If you haven't updated, that's the first thing to try.
- Try the Direct3D 12 launch option. v1.5 added a launch option that lets Windows users run the game under D3D12 instead of the default renderer. The developers explicitly recommend trying this if you're hitting graphics issues. Steam → right-click Machine Party → Properties → Launch Options → the D3D12 flag.
- Update your GPU driver to the latest version from AMD or Nvidia. Vulkan errors often point at outdated drivers.
- If nothing works, post to the official Bugs & Issues thread on the Steam discussion board. That's the developer's report channel.
That's it. We are deliberately not listing any other "fixes" because none of them have a source for this specific game.
What the Developers Have Said
The two concrete pieces of guidance from official channels:
- The v1.5 patch shipped a batch of graphics fixes. From the v1.5 announcement: the engine upgrade to Godot 4.5.2 "fixes a batch of graphics issues across various hardware configurations." If you're not on v1.5 or later, upgrading is the first move.
- The D3D12 launch option exists for graphics problems. From the same v1.5 announcement: the launch option lets you pick between "normal mode" and "Direct3D 12." The official wording is to start in normal mode and switch to D3D12 only if you hit graphics issues. The store page has no tutorial for this — the option lives in Steam's launch options UI for the game.
That's all the official guidance. There is no official "Vulkan fix" tutorial, no list of approved drivers, no troubleshooting guide.
Symptoms Players Are Reporting
Player reports on the Steam discussion board describe several distinct failure modes. Knowing which one you're hitting helps when you report the issue:
- "Black window flash, then closes silently" — most common report. The launcher opens, a black window appears for a fraction of a second, then the game closes with no error message. Players with dual-GPU laptops (an integrated AMD GPU plus a discrete GPU) seem especially prone to this.
- "Open and close, no error" — same shape, no message at all. Some posters report trying multiple driver versions and clean reinstalls with no change.
- "No picture / black screen on launch" — the game launches but shows no image, or shows a black screen for an extended period.
These descriptions are paraphrased from the Steam discussion board. We are not linking to specific posts because doing so would identify the posters; the descriptions match multiple independent reports.
A useful negative finding: searching the Steam discussion board for the word "vulkan" returns zero results. Players are not using "Vulkan error" to describe these crashes. The crash may be a Vulkan issue, but the symptom language is "won't open", "won't launch", "no error", "black screen" — not "Vulkan error". So if you arrived here searching for a literal Vulkan error, you might be seeing a similar symptom caused by something else.
What This Page Deliberately Does Not Tell You
There are a lot of generic Vulkan / Godot / Windows troubleshooting checklists out there — open these ports, change these drivers, delete this folder, set this environment variable, switch to this rendering backend. We are not going to list them here for one reason:
None of them have a primary source for Machine Party specifically.
A Steam discussion board search for "firewall" returns zero results. A search for "vulkan" returns zero results. A search for the most common generic Godot/Vulkan fixes returns no community-validated solution for this game. The two most relevant crash reports on the discussion board have replies asking the same questions, with no answers that worked.
So we won't tell you to:
- Open Steam ports in your firewall or router.
- Change NAT type.
- Switch DNS servers.
- Use a VPN, accelerator, or proxy service.
- Delete shader caches from other games.
- Force a specific GPU in a GPU control panel.
- Roll back your GPU driver.
Some of those may actually work for you, some of them may make things worse. Without a single verified report of any of them fixing Machine Party specifically, we don't have a basis to recommend them. The official D3D12 launch option is the only officially-supported workaround.
If Nothing Above Works
If you've updated the game, updated your GPU driver, tried the D3D12 launch option, and the game still won't open:
- Post to the official Bugs & Issues thread on the Steam discussion board. That's where the developers say to report things.
- Include your hardware: CPU, GPU, driver version, OS version, and exactly what happens (window flashes and closes, black screen, error text if any).
- Search for similar reports first. If yours is the same as an existing report, post a reply with your hardware specs rather than a new thread.
The Steam discussion board has a pinned thread titled "Bugs & Issues - Report them here" — that's the right place.
